Bender Plumbing Supply plans to expand its Grand Avenue headquarters and warehouse by about 38%, adding 12,751 square feet.
A family-owned plumbing and HVAC supplier is proposing a 12,751-square-foot warehouse addition at its corporate office and wholesale operation at 580 Grand Ave. in New Haven.
Bender Plumbing Supply is seeking city approval to expand the approximately 33,400-square-foot building to about 46,200 square feet, an increase of roughly 38%.
The addition would be constructed along the western side of the existing building. Plans also call for minor grading and utility work and an underground system to manage runoff from the new roof.
The warehouse was built in 1963 and sits on 4.08 acres, according to city property records. The property is owned by 580 Grand Avenue LLC, which acquired it for $1.55 million in 2014. The limited liability company is controlled by Nina Bender, state records show. The property has an appraised value of $1.73 million.
Bender is a fourth-generation Connecticut company with additional locations in Hartford, Waterbury, Bridgeport, Stamford and Norwalk.
The application states that construction would begin after approvals are secured and is expected to be completed within a year. A project cost and potential job impact were not disclosed.
The proposal is scheduled for site plan and coastal site plan review at the New Haven City Plan Commission’s Sept. 16 meeting, although the draft agenda indicates the item is expected to be passed over.
