Pitney Bowes to shutter Ohio operations

Stamford mail processing-equipment maker Pitney Bowes Inc. will shut down its Miamisburg, Ohio operations by the end of the year, putting 75 people out of work, the Dayton Business Journal reports.

The bulk of the reductions will hit in the second and third quarters of 2010, DBJ reported Tuesday on its Web site.

About 30 jobs are being outsourced to a third-party logistics company and about the same number are shifting to a Pitney Bowes facility near Indianapolis, the newspaper reported.

Broder said some local employees are being offered the opportunity to relocate to Indiana.

The company also will be looking to sell its three buildings in Miamisburg, which total 170,000 square feet of space, he said.

The Miamisburg operation is a logistics and distribution facility supporting its parts and supplies business, as well as some finished goods shipping and receiving, DBJ said.

“The reason for the move is part of an overall streamlining of our U.S. supply chain operations, which are consolidating into a smaller number of national centers complemented by enhanced partnering with third-party logistics providers,” Broder said.

Pitney Bowes manufactures mail processing equipment and provides related business solutions.
