The Phoenix Cos. Inc. announced Wednesday the life insurer’s historic boat-shaped downtown Hartford headquarters has sailed into a unique place among energy-efficient buildings.
One American Row is the second existing office tower in Connecticut to obtain the silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, Phoenix said.
It also is the first New England office building to be both LEED certified and on the National Register of Historic Places. It joined the register in 2005.
The two-sided “boat building” opened in 1963 as an example of the modernist architectural style. It has 13 upper floors and three lower levels.
Phoenix said the project began as a way to improve the building’s energy and water use, and to give employees a healthy workplace.
The building earned 12 out of a possible 15 LEED points for energy performance, five short of earning LEED gold.
