Phoenix, PHL miss again on SEC filings

Hartford life insurer Phoenix Cos. Inc. and its PHL Variable Life unit have both missed late October deadlines on a pair of overdue quarterly financial filings with federal securities regulators, and face more cash penalties.

Phoenix disclosed Tuesday in a terse 8-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it missed last Friday’s deadline for submitting its delayed 10-Q report for the quarter ended June 30 of this year.

Its PHL unit also failed to meet Tuesday’s filing deadline for its second-quarter 10-Q, the filing said.

Both “intend to file these reports with the SEC as soon as they are completed,’’ Phoenix said in Tuesday’s 8-K filing.

On Oct. 20, Phoenix revealed its remaining filing timetable for the rest of its delayed financial filings for its and PHL that were contained in an SEC administrative order imposed on the insurer and its subsidiary this summer. That order declared Phoenix faced extra SEC fines for missing future deadlines.

In late September, Phoenix and PHL caught up with their 10-Q filings for the first, second, and third quarters of 2013.

The SEC already has fined Phoenix $750,000 for earlier filing lapses, and threatened another $20,000 a week in fines, or as much as $200,000, if it breached future filing deadlines.
