Tobacco giant Philip Morris International is moving its corporate headquarters to Connecticut’s Fairfield County from New York.
The move will bring 200 jobs to Fairfield County, where the PMI will relocate, CEO Jacek Olczak said at a Tuesday morning event announcing the move, featuring Gov. Ned Lamont and former Pepsi CEO Indra Nooyi.Â
PMI is scheduled to make the move next summer.
“Both Connecticut and PMI, we’re both reinventing ourselves,” Lamont said. “Look at the new PMI… [Connecticut is] changing with the times, and that’s what PMI is doing.”
Olczak also acknowledged PMI’s reputation as the most famous cigarette maker, but said he hopes people keep an open mind to the company’s pivot to smokeless products. The CEO also said he sees opportunity in working with Connecticut.Â
“Connecticut is a smaller state… some people think it’s better to be a bigger fish in a smaller pond,” Olczak said. “I do believe with the right collaborations [with the state] we can really achieve great things.”
