PGA confirms 2023 Travelers Championship will feature bigger purses, top golf stars

Following a report earlier this week, the PGA Tour has confirmed that the Travelers Championship will have “elevated” status in 2023, meaning a bigger prize pool and guarantee of top players.

The PGA Tour sent a memo to its membership Wednesday announcing that the Travelers Championship is among four additional events that will have elevated purses and guaranteed appearances by top golfers in 2023.

These four newly elevated events join the 13 already announced by the PGA in August. Other than Travelers, the new elevated tournaments are: the WM Phoenix Open; the RBC Heritage; and the Wells Fargo Championship.

Each elevated tournament will have a $20 million purse, and players who finished in the top 20 in the PGA’s 2022 Player Impact Program are required to participate in all elevated events for which they are eligible, as well as at least three additional events.

According to the PGA, the four new elevated tournaments are for this year only and could rotate on an annual basis.

This year’s Travelers Championship generated more than $2.5 million to benefit more than 130 charitable organizations. The annual tournament donates 100% of its net proceeds to nonprofits. This year’s primary beneficiary was The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in Ashford, which provides a traditional summer camp experience for children with serious illnesses.

The annual event has raised more than $25 million for more than 800 local nonprofits since Travelers became title sponsor in 2007.

The 2023 Travelers Championship will take place June 19 to 25 at TPC River Highlands.
