Perez proposes 5 percent tax hike

Hartford Mayor Eddie A. Perez on Monday proposed a fiscal 2010-11 budget that requires a 5 percent property-tax hike to close a previously forecast budget gap.

“The good news is we have maintained an excellent fiscal rating and reputation, despite the biggest ‘economic tsunami’ in our memory,” Perez said in a statement.

“Unfortunately without additional state or federal relief,” he said, “we are forced to increase the financial burden on Hartford taxpayers.”

Perez’s proposal raises property taxes by 3.5 percent and 1.5 percent in the final two fiscal years to close a previously estimated $43 million budget gap.

Raising the tax rate to 76.64 mills would add an extra $340 to the annual tax bill on a single-family home assessed at $56,840, the mayor said.

Taxes on a mixed-use property assessed at $93,480 would climb by $1,364 a year.
