People’s United Bank offering identity, credit protection service amid COVID-19 scams

People’s United Bank has rolled out a new digital identity and credit protection service aimed at monitoring a customer’s account on a single dashboard.

The Bridgeport-based bank, a subsidiary of People’s United Financial Inc., on Monday announced it partnered with Irish consumer credit reporting company Experian plc to offer the so-called AlwaysChecking service to all personal account holders and for those opening a new account.

Officials on Monday said the new service provides credit monitoring, email alerts, and child and family monitoring on the darknet, which is a network of secret websites that can only be accessed with certain software or authorization.

AlwaysChecking also provides Internet surveillance and detection of stolen personal information such as passports, license and credit cards, among other items.

The new service debuts as companies and federal authorities are working to blunt the attempts by criminals to exploit the coronavirus pandemic through various online scams.

“In this age where our personal lives readily intersect with our digital lives, the frequency of data breaches and the availability of personal data on the dark web is on the rise,” said People’s United Bank CEO Jack Barnes. “Banking has evolved, and it’s no longer simply about safeguarding our customers’ monetary assets, but it’s more important than ever to monitor their digital identities as well.”

Headquartered in Bridgeport, People’s United Bank says it has more than $60 billion in assets with more than 400 retail locations in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
