Paving company, its president sentenced in DOT bid-rigging case

A Massachusetts paving company and its president have been banned from doing any work for Connecticut for the next three years following their convictions of bid rigging conspiracy.

Prosecutors say Marino Brothers of N.E. Inc, of Peabody, Mass., must also pay $30,000 in restitution and fines. Company president Robert Marino was ordered to perform 100 hours of community service and pay $5,000 in restitution to the state of Connecticut. The sentences were handed down Tuesday in New Britain Superior Court.

They were convicted in August of two counts each of conspiracy to commit bid-rigging after an investigation into corruption in the state DOT.

Prosecutors say they Marino bribed state employees and colluded with a former DOT maintenance manager to make Marino the sole contractor on various paving jobs between 1997 and 2004. During that time the company received more than 4 million dollars in paving contracts.
