Pair of CT health care nonprofits merging

Two Connecticut nonprofits that provide behavioral health and domestic violence services are merging into a single organization with nearly 300 employees.

Birmingham Group Health Services Inc. in Ansonia and Harbor Health Services Inc. headquartered in Branford announced Friday that their respective boards of directors have voted tentatively to merge the two organizations.

Management teams from both organizations are currently performing a due diligence and integration plan that is expected to be completed for board review by October.

If the merger is formally approved, a unified organization will begin operating in January 2012 to serve as a regional provider of behavioral health and domestic violence services.

The proposed merger will bring together two organizations with complementary programs, including mental health, addiction and prevention services, and domestic violence services.

Birmingham has 180 employees and is the mentally health authority for the towns of Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour and Shelton.

Harbor Health is a private, nonprofit with 104 employees that provides comprehensive mental health and addiction services.
