Aetna Inc. Chief Executive Ronald A. Williams took home $3.14 million in base pay, bonuses and other cash compensation in 2008, just slightly greater than a year earlier, according to company proxy filings.

In 2007, Williams’ cash compensation totaled $3.1 million, filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission show.

The filing indicates that Williams’ compensation was based Aetna’s “superior operating performance” and the launching of new products and services.

Aetna’s annual shareholders meeting is May 29 in Jacksonville, Fla.
