Oxford power plant gets air permits

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said it has issued air permits for a recently approved natural-gas-fired power plant in Oxford.

The permits set air pollution control requirements and emissions limits for the 805-megawatt Towantic Power Plant, which is owned by Competitive Power Ventures of Maryland.

The Connecticut Siting Council approved the plant earlier this year, and DEEP gave tentative approval to the air permit application in July.

The plant has been controversial among some area residents. Neighboring Middlebury challenged the Siting Council’s decision in July in Connecticut Superior Court. That suit is still ongoing.
