Outspoken Leonardi lands on int’l insurance panels

Connecticut Insurance Commissioner Thomas B. Leonardi’s advocacy for greater regulatory oversight of big, international insurers has gained traction with his peers.

Leonardi has been named chairman of the international committee of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). The committee’s mission is to strengthen the global regulatory system through close cooperation with international regulators and support the U.S. federal government in insurance trade issues.

In addition, he’s been seated on the executive committee of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors. Leonardi already is the only U.S. regulator on the group’s financial stability committee.

Last February, Connecticut became the first U.S. insurance regulator to sign the IAIS’ Multilateral Memorandum of Understanding, a framework that establishes a formal basis for global cooperation and information exchange among insurance regulators.

Leonardi is on the NAIC’s newly created Financial Stability Task Force, and continues as vice chairman of its accreditation committee and as a member of its executive committee.
