The former site of the St. Raphael’s surgery center in Hamden is slated to become a new outpatient surgical center specializing in spine, orthopedic and podiatric surgeries.
Surgical Care Affiliates, which owns and operates multiple, licensed surgical facilities in Connecticut, said it will open the Northeast Alliance Surgery Center (NEASC) with area physicians at 2080 Whitney Ave. this fall.
Dr. James J. Yue, a spinal surgeon formerly with the Yale School of Medicine, will lead the center, which is expected to bring 20 full-time jobs to Hamden in its first year of operation.
“North East Alliance Surgery Center will provide safe, innovative, high-value ambulatory surgical care with an added focus on optimizing patient post-operative recovery and outcomes,” Yue said in a statement.
SCA is part of UnitedHealth Group affiliate Optum, which has been working with ProHealth Physicians, a Connecticut physician’s group and another Optum company, on developing a statewide ambulatory care network.
Dale Kroop, Hamden’s economic development director, said he has worked for two years, with the help of the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development, to bring the surgery center to the vacant space.
The 15,712-square-foot-facility will undergo a significant renovation to bring the space up to code and ensure a safe environment for patients and staff, Kroop said.
When finished, it will include three operating rooms, one procedure room and recovery rooms for patients who need to remain at the center overnight.
This is SCA’s first surgical center in New Haven County and its seventh in Connecticut, said Gina Mondo, SCA’s vice president of operations.
“We look forward to partnering with the physicians at North East Alliance Surgery Center and expanding the physician partnership, which will enhance our ability to provide specialized, high-value surgical services, such as total joint replacement, in a low-cost, easy-access setting for patients in Hamden and surrounding areas,” Mondo said in an email.
In addition to minimally invasive spine, orthopedic and podiatric surgery, the center will offer pain management, specialized retina care and interventional cardiology.
