Otis celebrates 160th Anniversary

Farmington manufacturer Otis Elevator Co. celebrated its 160th anniversary on Wednesday by showcasing some new products designed to decrease building energy usage.

During the celebration, Otis profiled its Gen2 Switch product line of elevators that reduce power usage by elevators, is solar-power capable, and uses batteries when the power goes out.

Elisha Otis founded the company in 1853, developing a safety brake system designed to keep elevator platforms from falling.

Otis – a subsidiary of Hartford conglomerate United Technologies Corp. – now has reached annual revenue of $12 billion, 60,000 employees in more than 200 countries, and maintenance of 1.7 million elevators worldwide.
