OTC drugs now tax free

Over-the-counter medications are now tax free, Gov. Dannel Malloy reminded residents Wednesday.

The removal of sales tax on antihistamines, antacids, pain relievers and other products sold over the counter is part of a law passed last year. It took effect April 1.

Facing a projected surplus last year that later evaporated, Malloy had initially proposed to remove sales tax from clothing purchases under $50, but later had to renege as the state’s fiscal picture worsened.

The state began taxing OTC medications and clothing in 2011.
