Opponents push back on CT detention center

Opponents to a proposed girls’ juvenile detention center in Bridgeport are preparing for a fight.

State Rep. Christopher Caruso, a Bridgeport Democrat, and City Councilman Robert Curwen are criticizing Gov. M. Jodi Rell for pushing the detention center.

Opponents of the center plan a press conference Wednesday.

The governor said Tuesday that the State Bond Commission, which she chairs, is expected to approve $15 million for the project next month. She says the program offers girls a chance to grow up to live productive lives.

Caruso refers to the facility as a jail and says Rell is showing “arrogance and total disregard” for Bridgeport residents.

Curwen says there is broad agreement that the detention center is needed, but other sites would be better. (AP)
