OPM IDs nearly $55M in state cuts

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s administration said Thursday afternoon that it would cut $47.8 million from executive branch agencies and it has asked the legislature for an additional $6.9 million in judicial and legislative cuts.

The state Office of Policy and Management said the cuts are a second step, following OPM Secretary Benjamin Barnes instructing state agencies last week to reduce spending and curtail hiring.

Officials are trying to close an estimated state budget deficit of $99.5 million for the current fiscal year.

The Board of Regents for Higher Education faces $2.8 million in cuts, including $1.6 million from Connecticut State University and $1.2 million from its “Transform CSCU” initiative.

Meanwhile, economic development, arts and tourism programs under the state Department of Economic and Community Development face a total of $705,000 in cuts.

The Labor Department will lose $555,000, including $180,000 from a program providing job opportunities for the unemployed.
