To both correct and clarify information provided in Hartford Business Journal’s Other Voices March 6, 2023 opinion piece by Julia Johnson Brinson, Hartford Public Library does have, and always had, comprehensive insurance coverage.
Risk management is a key component of our overall planning and fiduciary responsibilities as stewards of public and private investment. It is discouraging that someone who identifies as an insurance research specialist didn’t think to contact the Library or The Mark Twain House & Museum for the facts before penning this critique.

They are our neighbors on Main Street and longtime supporters of the programs and services the Library provides to the community. Travelers has offered exceptional support and excellent service during this challenging time.
As the Capital City public library, we work closely with the City of Hartford’s Risk Manager, and we value this professional partnership in identifying, describing, and implementing sound risk management practices.
Hartford Public Library’s Restore and Renew campaign is not a crowdfunded campaign. It is one of relationships. We created this campaign in direct response to the generous outpouring of support from friends and partners to cover those expenses not covered by insurance.
Time and again the Hartford Public Library has proven itself to be a vital civic anchor in the City of Hartford and we are committed to continuing that work with our community and partners.
In 2024, Hartford Public Library will be marking 250 years since its inception and we are working to restore services to the Downtown location as quickly as possible to continue this tradition of service to all.
