Operation Fuel reopens to aid needy

Operation Fuel has reopened its energy assistance program for another two months to aid needy Connecticut households threatened with the spring loss of utility services.

With the help of individual and corporate donors, about $150,000 is available through June 30 to help an estimated 750 households keep the lights, gas and oil on, said Operation Fuel CEO Patricia Wrice.

This is the first time Operation Fuel has opened beyond its winter assistance season, Wrice said.

But due to the limited funding, qualifications for spring season aid will be much tighter, she said. Applicants must show true financial hardship along with an effort toward paying their utility bills.

This past winter, Operation Fuel and its network of more than 100 fuel banks gave out nearly $1 million in energy assistance to more 2,600 households but had to temporarily stop accepting applications at the end of February when the money ran out.
