Easter Seals Capital Region & Eastern Connecticut held its 23rd annual Crystal Ball Gala to raise funds for their growing Breast Cancer Pathways Program, which seeks to rebuild bodies, minds and lives through comprehensive medical and vocational services. The dinner and dance netted more than $220,000.

• The local branch of the Muscular Dystrophy Association raised more than $18,000 during its annual Wallingford/Meriden Lock-Up at Serafino’s Ristorante Italiano in Wallingford.

Mary Pashley of Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, raised $2,309 to lead the way. Other top fundraisers were Suzanne Stempien-O’Rourke of the Stempien Funeral Home, who raised $1,400; Dan McKercher of North Plains Computer Repair, who raised $1,210; Matthew Oblon of Aloka, Inc., who raised $905, and Scott Bartlett and associates of Panera Bread, who raised $575.

Chrysalis Center Inc. hosted a roundtable discussion on developing affordable housing using prefabricated recycled materials — such as metal shipping containers — with the goal of reducing cost and environmental impact. The event brought together experts from numerous disciplines, including development, architecture, urban planning, law, and green construction.

In addition to Chrysalis Center’s executive director Sharon Castelli and associate director Anthony Hebert, roundtable participants include Peter Gill Case, Truthbox Architects; Michael J. Crosbie, professor and department chair, University of Hartford, Department of Architecture; Barbara S. McGrath, assistant director, Connecticut Urban Legal Initiative, Inc., University of Connecticut School of Law; Emily J. Moos, Capital Region Council of Governments; F. Todd Renz, O,R&L Construction and president, Connecticut Green Building Council; and Kathryn Frankel, economic development coordinator, Common Ground.
