‘Wizard of advertising’
Ira Yellen, CEO of First Experience Communications in Glastonbury, has been immortalized as a ‘wizard of advertising’ in actor Leonard Nimoy’s ‘Secret Selves’ photo exhibit and book.
The odyssey began in November, 2008, when Nimoy, who achieved cult status as “Spock” in the “Star Trek” series, gathered over one hundred subjects from all walks of life and asked them the question, “Who do you think you are?”
Each subject was recorded as Nimoy interviewed them and created a photographic portrait of their “alternate identity.” The secret identities that emerged — from rock stars to dog lovers — offer an intimate, sometimes humorous, and often profound new look at the inner yearnings and fantasies that we all share, Nimoy writes.
Gail Patrice Yellen, owner of Gail Patrice Design in Glastonbury, made the wizard costume her husband wore in the photo.
The Secret Selves exhibit will run through Dec. 31 at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams, Mass.

Hotel Marks Anniversary
The Marriott Hartford Downtown, the 409-room hotel attached to the Connecticut Convention Center, will mark its fifth anniversary with a week of ‘5s’. From Aug. 16-21, the hotel will offer a host of items — appetizers, drink specials and a selection of Vivo menu items — from the 2005 menu with 2005 prices. On Aug. 18, WDRC’s Brad Davis will be broadcasting from the lobby with a large #5 made entirely of cupcakes for “Cupcakes for a Cause.” The entire proceeds from every $5 cupcake and coffee sale will go to benefit the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. A special Silent Auction will be held from 5:30 a.m. -8 p.m. for a one night stay in the Presidential Suite with dinner for two at the award winning Vivo Restaurant along with a couples massage at Glo Spa. The proceeds of this auction, as well as discounted services at Glo from 8:30 — 10 a.m., will also be donated to the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. The anniversary week will culminate with a special 5th Anniversary Party in Crush Lounge.
