• For the 10th consecutive year, Hartford Hospital was voted the 2009-2010 Consumer Choice Award winner for providing the area’s highest level of quality care. The hospital was awarded following a nationwide survey of health care consumers, conducted by National Research Corp. The study — Healthcare Market Guide Ticker — surveyed consumers for their perceptions of area hospitals. Hartford Hospital received the highest ratings in quality and reputation within its geographical area, as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau.
• The Waterford Group Charitable Foundation donated $1,000 to the Connecticut Chapter of the American Red Cross to support their relief work in the wake of a January fire that displaced 177 people from an apartment building on Willard Street in Hartford. Representatives from the Hilton Hartford hotel presented the check to Chris Baker, senior director of emergency services for the American Red Cross — Connecticut Chapter. The donation is designated to assist those who were impacted by the fire, including an associate from the Hilton Hartford who resided at the apartments.
• The Wireless Zone Foundation for Giving has chosen the Connecticut affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure to receive a donation of more than $3,500 this year and approximately $14,500 total over the last six years. This contribution will help Komen Connecticut support its mission to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures for breast cancer.
• The state Department of Environmental Protection is launching a state-of-the-art online system for power plants, factories and other facilities to report their emissions data electronically. The new Emissions Inventory Tracking (EMIT) system will allow Connecticut businesses and industries that face complex reporting requirements to submit annual emissions data through an online system rather than a paper-based system.
