• The Charter Oak Cultural Center is the recipient of a $10,000 donation from the Aetna Foundation. Four employees from Aetna’s African American Employee Resource Group attended Charter Oak’s annual garden kick-off party. The group is facilitating Aetna’s collection of seeds, plants and gardening tools for the gardens. Four members of the group — Reggie Tanis, Nicole Murphy, Martha Campbell, and Nadia Cunningham Reid –met the children who will benefit from Aetna’s financial and supplies donation. Charter Oak’s summer youth program, Putting Down Roots in Hartford, will begin in July and run daily through the second week of August. This free gardening program will teach Hartford kids, ages 8-13, how to tend to a garden, nurture plants and vegetables, and produce their own food. They will also learn math, science, reading and writing through the lens of the garden. The food grown by participants will be distributed to their families and neighbors.
