MDC WINS TWO AWARDS FOR MINORITY CONTRACTING

The Metropolitan District was named the Local Corporation of the Year by the Greater New England Minority Supplier Development Council for its commitment to and success in advancing minority business participation within MDC’s competitive procurement process.

MDC Commissioner Albert Reichin of Bloomfield accepted the award on behalf of the MDC and later said, “I am pleased to report that to date, the MDC has awarded approximately 24 percent of its total construction contracts for the Clean Water Project to minority and women-owned businesses.”

Also, David James, a 10-year employee with the MDC, was named Buyer of the Year by the group for his effort and initiative in developing minority business opportunities.

COUNCIL FOR PHILANTHROPY HONORS TWO

Herbert T. Clark III has been named the recipient of the John H. Filer Award by the Connecticut Council for Philanthropy for his leadership in promoting private action for the public good.

Clark, president of The Clark Group, is a founding board member of the Middlesex County Community Foundation and has served on the board of directors since the foundation’s inception in 1997.

He has been described as having “a big heart in the heart of Connecticut.” He and his wife, Sherry, have contributed time, resources and expertise to countless nonprofit organizations to ensure a brighter future for all who live and work in Middlesex County and beyond.

Also, Richard Sussman, director of the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving’s Brighter Futures Initiative, has been named recipient of the Martha S. Newman Award by the Connecticut Council for Philanthropy. The award honors outstanding staff performance in serving the philanthropic community.

The Brighter Futures Initiative is a 20-year, $25 million initiative designed to support school readiness and early school success for Hartford’s children by strengthening the system of services available for Hartford’s young children and their families. The Hartford Foundation recently committed an additional $10 million over five years to continue and enhance the successful work conducted to date.

VANTIS LIFE CEO HONORED

Peter L. Tedone, president and chief executive officer of Vantis Life Insurance Co. in Windsor, is the recipient of the American Council of Life Insurers Forum 500’s Distinguished Service Award.

The award is presented to an individual whose work has greatly contributed to the life insurance industry, especially to small and medium-sized life insurance companies, which the Forum 500 represents.

He received the award at the Forum 500 Section’s Leadership Retreat in Washington, D.C. on May 11.
