• As part of The Hartford’s 11th annual Adopt-A-Family program, nearly 1,000 employees from the company’s Greater Hartford offices anonymously adopted 188 families, providing gifts and essentials for the holiday season. The gifts were placed under a 20-foot holiday tree in the company’s headquarters while The Hartford’s Holiday Singers treated their fellow employees to a musical performance. Gifts will be distributed to local families through The Village for Families and Children in Hartford and Gifts of Love in Avon.

 

Comcast in Connecticut was recently honored by the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing (CTAM) with a Mark Award for its multimedia advertising campaign featuring University of Connecticut Coach Jim Calhoun. The Mark Awards competition is an annual national program that recognizes outstanding achievement and excellence in marketing from cable networks, cable companies and suppliers.

Northeast Utilities’ four southwest Connecticut transmission projects won a 2008 Platts Global Energy Award in the category of Energy Construction Project of the Year. The company’s achievement was announced and honored at an event held Dec. 3 in New York City. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Platts Global Energy Awards, which annually recognize outstanding achievement and vision in the global energy industry.

 

• Farmers in Hartford, Litchfield, Tolland and Windham counties may be eligible for disaster aid through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency. The U.S. Secretary of Agriculture recently issued a natural disaster designation for several counties in Massachusetts, making the adjacent counties in Connecticut eligible for the loans. Extreme weather patterns from June 15 through August 24 resulted in excessive heat, heavy rains, hail, high winds and lightning.
