Girls Scouts honor Merrill with Woman of Merit award

The Girl Scouts of Connecticut honored Secretary of the State Denise Merrill at the group’s Woman of Merit dinner recently at the Hartford Marriott Downtown.

In accepting the award for her personal achievement, leadership skills, and commitment to public service, Merrill told the audience that it is “our job to find the next generation of women leaders — both in politics and in business — and mentor them to success.”

“Girl Scouts taught me about working with others to get things done and values like honor, respect, responsibility, and loyalty. All of which are greatly needed in the fields I chose — public service and politics.”

Merrill has served as state representative from the 54th District for 17 years and rose to the rank of House Majority leader from 2008-2010, the second most powerful position in the Connecticut House of Representatives.

She continues her involvement in girl scouting today as the leader of the Capitol’s Honorary Girl Scout Troop. The troop provides a forum for members of the Senate and the House of Representatives to gather around issues important to women and girls. Secretary Merrill is also a member of Girl Scouts of Connecticut’s Board Development Committee.
