WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT AWARD

ESPN’S BODENHEIMER HONORED AT AMERICAN BUSINESS AWARDS

George W. Bodenheimer, president and CEO of ESPN Inc. in Bristol, was named executive of the year in the Media & Entertainment/ More Than 2,500 Employees category at the ninth annual American Business Awards.

ESPN wasn’t the only Connecticut company to be honored at the recent awards gala at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Manhattan. General Electric in Fairfield was honored as the most innovative company and CIGNA Government Services was named the information technology team of the year. The Nashville-based government services unit is a subsidiary of Connecticut General Life Insurance Co. in Bloomfield.

Bodenheimer joined ESPN, Inc. in 1981 straight out of college as a driver in the mailroom and worked his way up to executive vice president, sales and marketing in 1996. Two years later, Bodenheimer was appointed president and has since become the company’s longest-term top executive. Additionally, Bodenheimer is the president of ABC Sports as well as a co-chairman for Disney Media Networks.

WATER EXECUTIVE HONORED

The Bridgeport Regional Business Council honored Charles V. Firlotte, president and CEO of Aquarion Co., as its volunteer of the year. Firlotte is the immediate past chair of the Bridgeport Regional Business Council Board of Directors, having served as chairman in 2008 and 2009.

Aquarion Water Co. of Connecticut, an Aquarion subsidiary, is the public water supply company for approximately 180,000 customer accounts or more than 580,000 people in 39 cities and towns throughout Hartford, Litchfield, Middlesex, New Haven, Fairfield and New London counties. Aquarion, the largest investor-owned water utility in New England, is based in Bridgeport.

BLACK BAR NAMES TWO

Bryan Watson and Fallon DePina of the Wiggin and Dana law firm in New Haven were recently appointed to The George W. Crawford Black Bar Association board of directors as president and treasurer, respectively, for a one-year term.

Watson, whose practice includes employment and contract law, co-chairs the firm’s diversity committee. DePina, a member of the firm’s Private Client Services Department, was appointed to her second term as treasurer.

The George W. Crawford Black Bar Association is a volunteer state-wide organization of attorneys, judges, and law students in the state.
