Engineering firm honored

Wright-Pierce, a regional water, wastewater and infrastructure engineering firm with offices in Middletown, has received a merit award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Connecticut for the upgrade design of the town of Glastonbury’s water pollution control facilities.

The award-winning facility utilizes an innovative four-stage Bardenpho treatment process to achieve nitrogen reduction goals approximately three years ahead of the schedule mandated by the state Department of Environmental Protection as part of the efforts to improve water quality in Long Island Sound.

The Wright-Pierce design also minimizes operational costs and eliminates safety concerns associated with chemical storage and handling. The facility upgrade replaces chlorine gas with ultraviolet disinfection and avoids the need for supplemental carbon in the treatment process to achieve the nitrogen reduction goal.

Founded in 1947, Wright-Pierce is employee-owned and has a staff of approximately 175 engineers and support professionals located in eight offices throughout New England.
