LYMAN’S CROWNS WINTERFEST CHAMP

Unprecedented cold weather, a two-week delay and, of-course, more snow, did not deter nearly 10,000 visitors from turning out at historic Lyman Orchards in Middlefield last weekend to celebrate the 39th Annual Winterfest.

The two-day family event featured, for the first time, an ice-carving competition called Ice Wars, where five competitors went head-to-head against the clock and against each other to carve huge ice blocks into frozen works of art.

The winner, chosen by spectators, was Cheshire resident and former National Ice Carving Champion Bill Covitz, pictured right.

TWO CT SHELTER BOX USA VOLUNTEERS HONORED

Two East Hartfod volunteers, Peter and Sue Klock have been recognized by President Obama and ShelterBox USA with Presidential Volunteer Service Awards for their efforts during 2010 to provide shelter, warmth and dignity for survivors of natural disasters worldwide.

In the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake, while many watched on the television wishing they could make a difference, the Klocks helped raise awareness and fundraising for ShelterBox’s relief efforts.

The organization says it provided more than 28,000 ShelterBoxes which accounted for one-quarter of all of the tented shelter in Haiti.

The Klocks helped ShelterBox, based in Lakewood Ranch, Fla., last year raise more than $51,000, enough shelter for 51 families, the organization said.
