MARSHALL EARNS AWARD FOR SERVICE TO SCOUTING

State Labor Commissioner Glenn Marshall has been named recipient of the George Meany Award — the highest honor given by organized labor — presented by the Scouts of America for service to youth. Marshall is a past member of Boy Scout Troop No. 60, which is chartered to the Lake Forest Association in Bridgeport. He is a member of the board of directors of the organization’s Connecticut Yankee Council, which serves nearly 23,000 young people in Fairfield, New Haven and parts of Hartford counties. Marshall played a role in forming the Connecticut Construction Industry’s Good Scout Luncheon in 2005 — an event that has since raised more than $250,000 for character building and leadership development programs in southwestern Connecticut.

GUILFORD TEENS SELECTED AS VIDEO CONTEST FINALISTS

A video created by Guilford teens Alyssa Crespo and Heather O’Connell has been chosen as a finalist in the American Bankers Association Education Foundation’s “Lights, Camera, Save!” national video contest. The winners receive a U.S. savings bond. The video was submitted to Guilford Savings Bank in October and was selected by a panel of local judges. Crespo and O’Connell will each receive a $1,000 savings bond from Guilford Savings Bank for achieving first place on the local level.

After winning the first round, the video was entered into a national contest and was selected as a top 12 finalist from videos submitted by more than 175 participating banks — the only entry from New England to make it into the top 12. Lights, Camera, Save!, an offshoot of the ABA Education Foundation’s Teach Children to Save program, is a competition that encourages teens to use video to communicate the value of saving and inspire others to become lifelong savers. Grand prize winners will be announced in March via YouTube.
