• Gov. M. Jodi Rell designated October 13 as “Franklin Trust Federal Credit Union Day” in the state. The credit union celebrated its 75th anniversary on that date. “We are proud to reach this milestone,” said Kiernan J. Dubay, Franklin Trust’s president/CEO. “We thank all our member-owners for making it possible.” Chartered in 1934, Franklin Trust is the nation’s fourth oldest federal credit union.

Siemon, a worldwide leader in IT network infrastructure, announced that its global headquarters and United States manufacturing facility is a zero-landfill operation. According to an extensive ISO-14001 driven internal audit, over 99 percent of the waste material at Siemon’s Watertown campus is recycled, reused or repurposed in an environmentally sustainable manner. Siemon is the first and only network cabling manufacturer to achieve this notable green milestone and the first manufacturing company in the State of Connecticut to reach this level of recycling.

Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz dedicated the 2009 State Register and Manual, otherwise known as the “Blue Book,” to the 2009 NCAA National Champion University of Connecticut Women’s Basketball, a team that compiled a perfect 39-0 record on its way to winning the University’s 6th national title for Women’s Basketball. Secretary Bysiewicz also posthumously honored legendary 19th century educator and humanitarian Prudence Crandall, as well as two members of the military from Connecticut who recently gave their lives in the line of duty — Marine Corporal Christian S. Cotner, who died in Iraq on May 30, 2008 and Army First Lieutenant Thomas J. Brown, who also died in Iraq on September 23, 2008.
