• On Sept. 1, the Muscular Dystrophy Association Pediatric Clinic Program moved from Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford to Hospital for Special Care in New Britain. Under the direction of Charles Whitaker, M.D., and Kevin Felice, D.O., the clinic will become a distinct part of the outpatient neuromuscular program at Hospital for Special Care. The neuromuscular center at Hospital for Special Care has grown into the largest and most specialized clinic in the state. The types of conditions seen in the clinic include all neuromuscular disorders covered by the Muscular Dystrophy Association including muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy, Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathies, as well as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other motor neuron diseases (MND).

• The U.S. Department of State awarded a $373,000 Professional Exchange Grant to the Global Training and Development Institute (GTDI) at the Center for Continuing Studies (CCS) at the University of Connecticut. Roy Pietro, CCS’s Associate Director and Principal Investigator for the grant, noted that the purpose of the Young Entrepreneurs Program is to “promote cross-cultural understanding and to help young Kenyan entrepreneurs build successful businesses that create jobs and raise the standard of living in their communities, which is well-aligned with UConn’s institutional mission of fostering global citizenship.”
