• A new layer of competition and excitement has been added to the Travelers Championship, with the announcement that the tournament will be part of the Kodak Challenge that tees off on the PGA Tour in January 2009. Hole No. 15 at TPC River Highlands has been selected as a Kodak Challenge hole. The picturesque hole will be part of a new season-long competition that will capture players’ performance on some of the most beautiful holes on the PGA Tour. Players must play at least 18 of the 24 Kodak Challenge holes throughout the season to compete for the Kodak Challenge title and $1 million.
• JCJ Architecture of Hartford received honors for its work in three categories at the American Institute of Architects (AIA) of Connecticut awards presentations at the historic Pequot Library in Southport. In the category of Built Design: Preservation, JCJ Architecture, in association with Barkin Associates Architects, was recognized for the Betsy Ross Magnet School and Parish Hall Performing Arts Center in New Haven. For the category of Built Design: Institutional/Educational, JCJ won honors for the Regional Center for the Arts in Trumbull. For work in Unbuilt Design, the firm was honored for the Metamorphosis Restaurant concept in Las Vegas.
• Seven Connecticut funeral homes have been recognized for excellence by the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA). The state’s honorees, recognized for community service, dynamic public relations and professional integrity, are members of the Connecticut Funeral Directors Association. The Connecticut winners are: Bailey Funeral Home in Plainville; Burritt Hill Funeral Home in New Britain; Carmon Community Funeral Homes in Windsor; D’Esopo East Hartford Memorial Chapel in East Hartford; D’Esopo Funeral Chapel in Wethersfield; Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home in Vernon; and Newington Memorial Funeral Home in Newington. In addition, Carmon Community Funeral Homes received the “Best of the Best” Pursuit of Excellence Award and Bailey Funeral Home was inducted into NFDA’s Hall of Excellence.
