• Central Connecticut Senior Health Services recently received a $20,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain. The grant will be used to begin a cognitive fitness program for senior citizens at Jerome Home/Arbor Rose in New Britain and Mulberry Gardens of Southington, as well as for members of the general community who would like to participate in brain fitness.

 

• Gov. M. Jodi Rell has announced that the state has saved more than $1 million in payroll costs because of her directive in mid-January that asked nonunion managers to take one unpaid day of leave. The governor was among the 2,400 executive and nonunion managers who voluntarily took an unpaid furlough day as part of her cost-cutting move announced on Jan. 13.

• GSL Fiber Systems, of East Hartford, a sole-source provider of remote source lighting applications for the U.S. Navy, recently collaborated with students at the University of Connecticut’s Innovation Accelerator to identify emerging business opportunities for remote source lighting. The Innovation Accelerator, supported with state funding, builds an academic-industry partnership to further foster the entrepreneurial culture in Connecticut.

 

• A comprehensive state of Connecticut Web site to help follow the flow of federal stimulus dollars into the state will track the progress of stimulus-funded projects and monitor the availability and creation of jobs through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The new Web site is www.recovery.ct.gov. Connecticut has already begun receiving some of the $3 billion in federal stimulus money. Approximately $1.65 billion is in direct aid and grants while $1.3 billion is in the form of Medicaid assistance. The federal government estimates the ARRA will create and/or save more than 40,000 jobs in Connecticut.

• Data Management Inc.’s One Day Visitor Pass sign-in system has been named one of District Administration magazine’s Readers’ Choice Top 100 Products for 2008, the magazine recently announced. The award for the Farmington company is based on a poll conducted by DA magazine, which asked its readers to rate their favorite products from its online products directory. One Day Visitor Pass enables schools to issue expiring nametag security badges that cannot be used more than once.
