• The Education and Training Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor has announced a $2 million grant to the Connecticut Community Colleges to deliver education and training to prepare students with the work force skills needed to enter careers in growing fields of employment. The Sustainable Operations: Alternative and Renewable (SOAR) Energy Initiative hopes to make Connecticut a national and global leader in industries that will need skilled employees in a variety of career fields, including environmental technology, alternative energy, automotive technology, building performance, clean water and energy efficient operations.

 

• For the fourth straight year, United Technologies Corp. is on DiversityBusiness.com’s list of the Top 50 Organizations for Multicultural Business Opportunities. UTC’s supplier diversity program exemplifies DiversityBusiness.com’s goal of recognizing corporate leadership that provides business opportunities for diverse companies, according to the publication. During the past six years, UTC has spent approximately $1.7 billion with minority suppliers at an annual estimated growth rate of 18 percent.

Cantor Colburn LLP in Hartford has improved its position among the nation’s Top 100 trademark law firms, according to the most recent issue of the industry publication Trademark Insider. The firm now ranks 60th in the nation for new trademark applications submitted to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office during the third quarter of 2008. For the fourth consecutive year, Cantor Colburn attorney George A. Pelletier Jr. is among the Top 100 trademark attorneys for application filings, according to Trademark Insider.

 

• The City of Hartford has received more than $4.3 million in federal grant money to help reduce homelessness and support local shelters. The city’s goal is to end chronic homelessness by 2015. The federal dollars came from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
