- The Edison Electric Institute honored Northeast Utilities with the association’s Emergency Recovery Award for its restoration efforts following a severe ice storm that knocked out power to its customers in the Northeast. NU also received the Emergency Assistance Award for helping the Dayton Power & Light Co. bring its electric customers back on line following Hurricane Ike. The two awards are presented annually to U.S. and foreign-based member companies to recognize outstanding efforts in restoring electric service that has been disrupted by severe weather conditions or natural events.

• In conjunction with the American Cancer Society’s 33rd Annual Great American Smokeout, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, Hartford Hospital, and Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center announced plans to implement a tobacco- and smoke-free campus policy for all employees, patients and visitors on their campuses effective Nov. 19.

• Prudential Connecticut Realty’s Glastonbury office has received the company’s Top Selling Office award for 2008. Shelley Kirschenbaum was also named Leader of the Year. “Shelley and the sales executives in our Glastonbury office are committed to providing the best services in the industry,” said Candace Adams, president of the company. “Earning these awards is a testament to the effectiveness and professionalism of the entire team.”

• Warren Wollschlager, head of research and development for the Connecticut Department of Public Health — which oversees Connecticut’s stem cell program — witnessed at the White House the signing of the Presidential Order removing barriers to responsible scientific research involving human stem cells. Only eight states — California, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York — have passed programs authorizing spending on embryonic stem cell research since 2001.
