OF NOTE

Hanley To Receive O’Neill Legacy Award

Mary Ann Hanley, who has worked for over 20 years to keep Connecticut youths safe, successful and drug-free will receive the William A. O’Neill Legacy Award at the 20th annual Governor’s Luncheon held by The Governor’s Prevention Partnership. Hanley is Govenor Rell’s policy advisor for workforce development and administrative liaison for St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center. “Hanley truly exemplifies the theme of the luncheon, ‘The building blocks of leadership start with you,’ as, in her long career, she has been a true leader in youth prevention,” said Donald Langer, co-chair of The Partnership and CEO of AmeriChoice by United-Healthcare-CT. “Mary Ann goes one step further to define the meaning of this award.” Since her days as a founding staff member in 1989, working out of a tiny office in an old factory building, she has held countless positions within The Governor’s Prevention Partnership, including senior vice president and serving 16 years on the board of directors. In addition to honoring Hanley, the 20th annual Governor’s Luncheon will recognize three Partners in Prevention Award recipients: Purdue Pharma L.P. for leadership; Comcast for innovation, and News 8 — WTNH for media. LEGO CEO Soren Torp Laursen will deliver the keynote address at the luncheon Oct. 19 at the Hartford Marriott Farmington from 11:30 a.m. — 2 p.m.

Rock Cats Honored For ‘Going Green’ Campaign

The New Britain Rock Cats have been honored for initiating the best “green promotion” in all Minor League Baseball. The club’s “Going Green” campaign focused on the Three R’s — Recycling, Reusing, and Reducing The club established affiliations with four area vendors — AllWaste, Lantern Energy, Green Supply Company, and Pepsi — to implement this strategy. The season-long campaign — which will continue in 2011 — featured the installation of high efficiency lighting and associated controls; the use of partially recycled janitorial supplies; and the placement of recycling containers throughout the ball park. A major component of the successful effort was the active involvement of the team’s concessionaire, Centerplate, in recycling paper, plastic, cardboard, bottles and cans. In addition, the Rock Cats mounted a live, interactive exhibit called “The Green House” that served to further educate fans about a variety of energy and water saving measures, and the numerous benefits available to state residents through the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund. July 15 was designated “Going, Going, Green Night!” when the team distributed green tote bags and staged educational seminars.
