Homeward Bound, a West Hartford retailer with three stores, has been recognized for its community service. The store recently won two awards: a national Retailer Excellence Award for event-based community service from Gifts & Decorative Accessories Magazine, and the Arts in the Community award from Danbury’s Housatonic Valley Cultural Alliance.

 

Pilgrim Furniture City was recently recognized by the Housatonic Valley Association for Corporate Environmental Leadership in reducing carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions at its Milford showroom. The company partnered with Soltage Inc. and the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund to install 1,500 solar panels on the roof of the Milford showroom. Solar power generates 50 percent to 80 percent of the store’s energy needs.

• The state will receive $3.36 million in federal stimulus funds to help train and educate the state’s “green collar” work force for careers in emerging renewable and clean energy industries. The funds will support programs developed and coordinated by the Connecticut Green Jobs Partnership, a public-private labor and education consortium. The state received the grant through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Nearly $190 million in job training grants was awarded nationwide for energy sector job training and education.

 

• The Quinnipiac University School of Business has maintained its business accreditation by AACSB International — The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, Matthew L. O’Connor, dean of the business school, announced. Founded in 1916, AACSB International is the oldest accrediting body for business schools,

Barker Specialty Co. has been named one of three finalists for Web site of the Year in the promotional products industry. Barker was chosen from among 1,000 entrants and was the only Connecticut company honored for its creative and effective promotional website. Adrienne Barker received the award at The PPAI Expo 2010 awards presentation in Las Vegas.
