• Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center is the first in the region to offer a breakthrough treatment that is promising a better quality of life for patients with abdominal cancer. The procedure, called hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemoperfusion, is a combination of heat and chemotherapy used to treat patients with cancer that has spread to the abdominal cavity, typically from primary colon, appendix, gastrointestinal or ovarian cancer. It is also used to treat pseudomyxoma peritonei, a rare aggressive disorder characterized by the accumulation of mucus-secreting tumor cells in the abdominal region.
• Harrington Engineering Inc. of Rocky Hill received an Excellence in Construction Award from Associated Builders and Contractors of Connecticut for its Armed Forces Reserve Center project in New Windsor, N.Y. This year’s Connecticut ABC Excellence in Construction Awards Program represents the organization’s premiere competition within the construction industry by recognizing outstanding construction projects.
• Working families who earned up to $50,000 in 2009 and may qualify for the earned income tax credit are eligible for free tax preparation services, including electronic filing and direct deposit, now through April 15. As part of its commitment to helping working families become more financially stable, United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut is supporting Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites in Hartford, Manchester, East Hartford, New Britain, Enfield and Willimantic in partnership with the Bank of America Charitable Foundation and the Walmart Foundation. IRS-trained volunteers will help families prepare and electronically file their state and federal income tax forms and determine whether they qualify for tax credits and refunds, including the Earned Income Tax Credit.
