• The YMCA Eastern Regional Major Gifts Committee has received a $500,000 grant from the SBM Charitable Foundation for the construction of the new 40,000-square-foot Indian Valley Family YMCA on Pinney Street in Ellington. In lasting recognition of the Foundation’s support, the facility’s aquatic center will be named for The SBM Charitable Foundation. Upon completion, the Indian Valley Family YMCA will meet the growing demand for quality family services in the region. The facility will have warm and cool water pools, a health and wellness center, fitness studio, cycling studio, child watch and amazing kids (babysitting while using the facility) rooms and locker rooms. Schools and civic organizations will be able to use the facility for meetings and events, and the facility will become a center for area youth and teen programs.
• Increasing Latino involvement in civic affairs is the goal of a $40,000 grant awarded to the Connecticut Puerto Rican Forum by the Latino Endowment Fund of the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. The grant will help to build a new program called the Latino Knowledge Network of Greater Hartford. The two-year grant will fund the recruitment and training of 30 individuals each year — from every level of society — in 10 workshops focused on education, health, and policy. The Connecticut Puerto Rican Forum will work with two Hartford agencies, ASPIRA of Connecticut and Latino Community Services, to run the program.
• The state is offering a new, online service that allows unemployment insurance claimants to print the UC-1099G tax form they need directly from the state Department of Labor’s Web site. The service — paid for with a federal grant — will speed the processing time for both claimants and state employees and save the state on postage and printing costs. A special UC-1099G information line — (860) 263-6099 — is now in operation from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through April 15 to answer questions about the tax form. Representatives at this number are not able to answer questions about specific unemployment insurance claims.
