Obama Foundation selects Hartford for leadership program

President Barack Obama’s foundation is looking to mobilize young people in Hartford.

The Obama Foundation said its Community Leadership Corps (CLC) program is being placed this year in Hartford and Chicago, the organization’s home city, for those ages 18 to 25. The six-month program aims to bring 100 participants together to address opportunities and challenges in their neighborhoods.

In Hartford, CLC members must be able to commit 5 to 10 hours a week for three in-person training sessions between June 7-9, Aug. 16-18 and Nov. 8-10. Prospective applicants could hail from any of Hartford’s surrounding areas.

There is no monetary compensation for members, however, teams will have access to funding to support the implementation of their projects and ground transportation and meals will be provided, organizers said.

Participants will also learn about community organizing, leadership, project management and will be connected with local organizations, leaders and members of the foundation’s network of program alumni.

CLC debuted last year in Chicago, Columbia, S.C., and Phoenix, Ariz. Organizers said it chose Hartford as one of two locations in 2019 because more than 40 percent of the Capital City’s population is under 25 years old in addition to many “incredible organizations doing youth and civic focused work…” in the area, the foundation said in a program narrative.

“The Obama Foundation’s focus on investing in and supporting diverse young leaders is a perfect fit for a city like Hartford, and we are looking forward to working with them in the months ahead,” Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin said in a statement.

The Obama Foundation was established during the president’s second term in 2014.
