New York’s Shinnecock Indians are downplaying reports that a newly formed Connecticut group is opposing their bid for federal recognition, The Associated Press reports.
Several news reports Wednesday, including The Hartford Courant, said the Connecticut Coalition for Gaming Jobs contends the Shinnecock tribe has failed to meet all the criterion for federal recognition. The Southampton-based tribe was notified last month it would receive federal recognition following a lengthy review process that ends next week.
The recognition is required for any tribe wanting to operate a casino, as the Shinnecocks have indicated.
The Connecticut group says a New York casino would negatively impact the Foxwoods Resort & Casino and Mohegan Sun casinos in Connecticut. The coalition did not immediately respond to inquiries seeking comment.
Shinnecock spokeswoman Beverly Jensen predicted the 11th hour opposition would have no impact.
