NYC transit board cuts subway line, bus routes

New York City’s transit board has voted to approve cuts that will eliminate one subway line and dozens of bus routes, The Associated Press reports.

The service reductions to the nation’s largest mass transit system will save $93 million a year. Wednesday’s vote was part of an effort to dig out of a budget shortfall of more than $400 million.

Metropolitan Transit Authority chairman Jay Walder says the cuts were tough but necessary. Members of the public spoke out against them.

The board is also looking at eliminating discounted fares for students, but that proposal wasn’t considered Wednesday.

The cut subway line is the W, which runs in Queens and Manhattan. Another train will pick up the slack.
