Northeast Utilities has named a senior vice president from utility giant National Grid as the president of its natural gas division, which includes Yankee Gas in Berlin and NStar Gas in Boston.
William Akley served as the senior vice president of National Grid’s U.S. gas operations and was responsible for the company’s service territory in New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.
At NU, which is dually headquartered in Hartford and Boston, Akley will be responsible for delivering natural gas to 214,000 customers in Yankee’s 71-town service territory and 300,000 customers in NStar’s 51-town service territory.
Prior to joining National Grid, Akley worked at KeySpan Energy in New York, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. He began his career at Brooklyn Union Gas in New York City. He earned his MBA from Adelphia University in New York, his bachelor’s degree in mechanical and industrial engineering from Clarkson University in New York, and serves both the American Gas Association and the Northeast Gas Association.
Akley will report directly to Werner Schweiger, NU’s chief operating officer.
