Nuvance Health CEO to retire at end of the year

Dr. John M. Murphy, president and CEO of Nuvance Health, will retire at the end of the year, the organization announced Tuesday.

Murphy has served as CEO of Nuvance Health since it was formed in 2018 following the merger of Western Connecticut Health Network and Health Quest.

Nuvance Health merged with New York-based Northwell Health in May, creating a combined nonprofit regional health system that serves 13 million people via 28 hospitals in New York and Connecticut.

Before assuming administrative leadership roles with Nuvance Health, Murphy practiced as a neurologist, earning a reputation for clinical excellence and compassionate patient care.

“It has truly been the honor of a lifetime to serve this organization and to work with such talented and compassionate colleagues,” Murphy said.

Following Murphy’s retirement, the role of CEO will be eliminated, as Northwell Health will operate under a unified leadership model, it said.

Instead, Michelle Robertson, currently chief operating officer of Nuvance Health, will assume the role of market president for the Nuvance Health region. Her appointment takes effect Jan. 1.

Earlier this month, Northwell Health announced Dr. John D’Angelo as its president and CEO, succeeding Michael Dowling, who will step into an emeritus role after 23 years at the helm.

“Dr. Murphy has been a transformative leader whose impact will be felt for generations,” D’Angelo said. “We are grateful for his partnership and proud to carry forward the work he began.”
