Nutmeg CU extends lifeline to federal workers

Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union, which has three branches in the New Haven region, says it is offering low-interest loans to furloughed federal workers.

Based in Rocky Hill, Nutmeg State is among a handful of Connecticut financial institutions offering financial assistance to workers disrupted by the shutdown caused by an impasse between President Donald J. Trump and Congress over Trump’s insistence on more federal dollars to pay for a border wall.

On Tuesday, Webster Bank announced an interest-free loan program to eligible federal workers.

Nutmeg State CEO John Holt said the credit cooperative’s aid offer extends to its members and nonmembers, who can borrow up to $10,000 for 48 months at a 5.99 annual percentage rate. It has a 45-day deferred payment option and no early payoff penalty.

Existing Nutmeg borrowers who are furloughed federal workers may be eligible for a one-time loan-skip payment.

Applicants can register online or in person at Nutmeg branches, or by calling (860) 513-5000.

Nutmeg’s New Haven County branches are in Milford, Orange and North Haven.
