NU’s Mass. utility outlines upgrade plans

Northeast Utilities’ Western Massachusetts Electric Co. subsidiary is bringing its plans to upgrade regional power lines to a series of public meetings.

Company officials met this week with citizens in Agawam to discuss a proposed $714 million upgrade to 35 miles of transmission lines in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Project manager Jeffrey Towle says the improvements are necessary for simple reasons — to assure reliability and expand capacity.

Officials outlined a pair of plans to replace equipment that is 50 to 70 years old in some places.

Some people expressed concern about living too close to power lines and about losing property.

Additional hearings are scheduled for Thursday in Chicopee and next Wednesday in Wilbraham. (AP)
