Nurse turned CEO leads Sharon Hospital

From nurse to CEO, Kim Lumia didn’t take a typical career path toward senior leadership in health care.

Beginning her career as a nurse in Arizona, Lumia eventually rose to the top ranks of the industry when she was named chief executive officer and president of Sharon Hospital last September.

She now stands in select company as one of only five female hospital CEOs in Connecticut.

“It’s been a professional goal of mine to be a CEO of a hospital,” Lumia said in a recent interview.

Lumia, a Connecticut native, started her career as a critical care nurse in the cardiovascular intensive care unit at John C. Lincoln Hospital in Arizona.

While in The Grand Canyon State for seven years, she boosted her management credentials by earning an MBA and a master’s degree in nursing from the University of Phoenix.

Lumia eventually came back to Connecticut to join the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven as a patient care manager and nursing care coordinator. In 2009, she joined the administrative team at Sharon Hospital as chief nursing officer.

From there, she rose to the rank of interim CEO, after her predecessor Charlie Therrien left the hospital. Lumia was named the permanent CEO in September, and says it’s a position that is challenging, but rewarding.

“I have enjoyed it,” Lumia said. “It’s never a boring job.”
