Number of train accidents declines

The number of train accidents in Connecticut fell 16 percent in 2006, part of a nationwide trend that resulted in the safest year for railroads in 175 years, according to the Association of American Railroads. The safety mark coincides with the highest point in rail traffic in history, a year in which freight railroads invested $8.6 billion nationwide on infrastructure and equipment, said the group, a trade association for freight railroads.
